Director of Risk & Safety

Currently seeking a Director of Risk & Safety Professional in the Winston Salem, NC area. The Risk and Safety Director will provide leadership and functional risk and safety support to our restaurant employees (field operations). Working with leaders, the Risk and Safety Director will be instrumental in fostering a culture that embraces safe work practices and seeks to reduce hazards for employees, contractors, and guests. In order to accomplish these goals, the Risk and Safety Director constantly identifies, assesses and acts to reduce hazards in the workplace. By continuously improving the safety conditions in and around the workplace, accidents will be limited.
Responsibilities of the Director of Risk & Safety include:


    • Claims Management: 
    • Claims management involving workers compensation, general liability, property and auto coverages (i.e. Captive Generations Group)
    • Renewal of all insurance coverages (with exception of associate benefits). Responsible for evaluating the necessity of coverages, the dollar amounts of those coverages, self insured retentions/deductibles and all pertinent risk financing alternatives, etc.
    • Reviewing all insurance policies to ensure that Company is adequately covered for all reasonable potential Policies should also be reviewed to ensure that the most favorable language possible for Company is incorporated into the policies
    • Assist in supporting legal counsel as required with attendance at trials, arbitrations and mediations
    • Risk Mitigation Management:
    • Partner with key leaders to ensure that enterprise risks are considered during the Company’s strategic planning and business planning processes and that plans that are developed to measure, report, and manage these risks
    • Act as the lead project manager within the organization to facilitate the identification, evaluation and management of significant risks
    • Serve as a subject matter expert, advising managers on all risk and safety matters, and proactively recommending solutions in alignment with internal policies, law and other regulations
    • Continuously review risk activity information in order to target areas of concern and conduct field inspections based on such information as needed
    • Develop and implement procedures or corrective actions targeting current areas of concern in order to reduce the frequency and severity of risk activity
    • Safety Program Management:
    • Lead the management of employee safety programs and help support the development of enterprise risk management initiatives; such as, Crisis Communication Plans, Store Emergency Guides, Safety Data Sheets, Employee Training, etc.
    • Develop site-specific programs to train supervisors and employees, programs will meet internal standards and meet regulatory requirements
    • Coordinate, schedule, and present all required safety training for managers, employees and contractors
    • Track and report enterprise-wide safety goals according to key metrics (i.e. lost time accidents)
    • Conducting all necessary internal meetings regarding the risk and safety management function, including leadership of the safety committee; Track and report progress of safety committee activity, area safety audits, and incident investigations
    • Miscellaneous Projects:
    • Provide support, as needed, to People Excellence department and Restaurant Support and Distribution Center teams.


    Requirements of the Director of Risk & Safety:


      • A BS in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Sciences, or a related field is required or an equivalent combination of training and experience necessary to complete the responsibilities/ essential functions of the position is required
      • Certification or course work in occupational safety and environmental related programs is preferred
      • Previous or current First Aid/CPR/AED certification is If not, First Aid/CPR/AED certified, certification will be completed after hire
      • A minimum of eight (8) years risk and safety experience, preferably in a restaurant, hospital or retail environment
      • Experience supervising contractors, managing performance to key department goals, and communication to all levels of the organization
      • Experience with applicable local and state safety and environmental regulations as well as other applicable Federal regulations
      • Availability to be on call or work off hours as needed
      • Strong problem solving skills, written and verbal communication skills
      • Experience working with local regulatory agencies preferred
      • Flexibility to meet travel requirements – up to 50% to restaurants and corporate office depending on business needs
